Abstract
The word Linghai appeared from Tang Dynasty to Song Dynasty, especially appeared frequently in the anthologies of Song Dynasty people. The word Linghai should generally refer to the Guangdong and Guangxi regions at that time, which are between the five ridges in the north and the South China Sea in the south. The word Linghai in the name of “sea” often referred to or highlighted the sea and the isolated island of Hainan in Song Dynasty. The perception and understanding of Linghai by scholar bureaucrats in the central plains were still largely reflected in “miasma,” “wilderness,” “remote” and other aspects, which also affected the attitude of scholar bureaucrats when they worked or were relegated in Guangdong and Guangxi. To a certain extent, the word Linghai began to be used frequently, which was closely related to the development process of Lingnan in the Tang and Song Dynasties. It was also due to the people's further cognition and understanding of the natural geographical environment and marine humanities of Lingnan.
